Our History
Dynatech Machine Service is a family-owned business established by four sons of WWII POW Elbert “TJ” Blackwell, namely Sam, Nicky, Dennis, and Tim. Sam originally worked for Young Engineering, Tandematic in Spartanburg. Dennis began his machining career with Zima Corporation in Spartanburg. Nicky was employed as a maintenance supervisor at Phillips Fibers in Spartanburg and Tim worked for Liberty Life Insurance Company.
The brothers all brought different skills to the table, with Dennis being an expert in machining, Sam skilled in engineering and machining, Nicky having an in-depth understanding of machinery construction and mechanics, and Tim having expertise in computer and information technology.
Two of the brothers, Sam and Dennis, each started their own machine shops behind their homes, which quickly grew beyond their capacities. To expand, they developed a plan to merge their shops by purchasing land and constructing a larger facility. Nicky and Tim, who were employed elsewhere, were offered and accepted partnership opportunities in the new venture.
After acquiring property at 130 Frey Road in Fairforest, the building was constructed, and Sam and Dennis’ equipment was moved in, officially beginning operations in October of 1986. With the help of three of their sons who joined as machinists, they were able to meet the demands of the business, and additional equipment was purchased over the years. The company even required an expansion in 1994 to make room for the welding and fabrication of the fixture business.
Dynatech Machine Service operated successfully for over 36 years, thanks to the Blackwell brothers’ unique skill sets. However, in December of 2022, the company was purchased by Hargett Machine Services, with Dan Hargett taking over as the new owner. He pledged to maintain the same standard of service and precision that Dynatech had been providing since its inception. In fact, Dan plans to grow the company by increasing personnel and upgrading equipment to meet the increasing demands of the industry. Allen Lomax was hired as the new manager, and the company has already taken steps towards growth, such as hiring three Spartanburg Community College students and purchasing two Haas Vertical Milling Machines.
Overall, Dynatech Machine Service has been a family-owned business that has thrived for over 36 years, and now, with the new ownership of Hargett Machine Services, it looks like it will continue to thrive and grow in the future.
